My good friends at Magenta Marketing came to me with an exciting new project. These are the same people that work on the Commissionaires Security projects with me. Kinetic Security is a sort of spin-off on Commissionaires. It’s the younger, better-looking brother with a little more edge compared to the Commissionaires brand. Considering we were going to use similar locations it was a challenge to keep the two brands looking notably different from one another. All in all the shoot was really fun and I think it was successful .

We were also asked to shoot motion of the project, when I get an edited version of that I will post it too.

Boxing is pretty photogenic!! I did a favour for a really good friend last week. He had agreed to shoot a boxing event for a friend of his and had to go out of town. I was happy to jump in and cover the event. I don’t box. I don’t go to boxing events. When I was in 4th grade I got sent to the principle’s office for punching a guy in 6th grade. That’s all I know about boxing. I have to say my stereotypical assumptions were wrong. It was a great time, fun to shoot, and everyone there were top notch people. Harrison Boxing ran the event. So I have to say I was sceptical, but in the end I realize I would love to shoot boxing again, and I hope the opportunity comes up again. A great night.

They came back again for more shots for the 2011 Annual Report. These guys are great. They have a good business that is easy to deal with as a customer, and easy to deal with as a vendor. I know, because I am both vendor and customer! Anyways, this time every year they start putting together their Annual Report. BauWow is once again in charge of the design, and decided a studio shoot was in order. I guess there’s a lot of landscape shots supplied by members for the piece so in order to calm the eyes, we shot some studio stuff for the member profiles.

Cool little gig with some great people form Columbia College. This is exactly the type of shoot I love to be involved in. Real people, real scenarios, and everyone wants to be there and be involved. These images will be used for their new recruitment and advertising campaigns.

It never fails….well at least it hasn’t failed for the last four years….

February is a busy month for me! This is a good thing! I’ve already been quite involved in pre-production on several upcoming jobs and the real shooting started today. I had a great little shoot today with Michael Audain of Polygon. Tomorrow I am attending a one day workshop with Josephine Derobe a French 3D film maker. Tomorrow night I have a shoot at a boxing match that I can’t wait to do. Wednesday I have  shoot at Columbia College for their Look Book. In addition to all this I have work for Commissionaires, Kinetic, Prospera and possibly two other clients. I am trying to develop an iPhone app. I am also taking down my show at Film2Frame and prepping it for the next show at Place Des Arts, as well as adding to that show with new 3D work.

When I get slow I tend to throw a lot of my fingers towards many different pies. Often all those pies are done at the same time. This is one of those times.

Exciting month ahead for sure, I am looking forward to it. This is the shot I worked on this morning with Michael Audain. To me it seems like the calm before the storm……bring on the storm!

The wind woke me up at around 4am this morning. With only a half hour to go before I usually get up, I figured I might as well take advantage of the day and see what I could find. Usually at 5:30am I am coming home from somewhere, this morning found me leaving my cozy bed and heading to the beach to get some shots. I love the long exposure ocean work that some people are so great at. What I find hard is that we don’t often have big winds in Vancouver, and it’s even rarer to get them right at the time of day when it counts. I got lucky this morning, it all lined up, along with a high tide to top it all off.

We are trying hard to stay ahead of the trends, which admittedly is probably keeping us just with the trends, and in some cases slightly behind the trends but miles ahead of the competition. What I am trying to say is that the advancements in the use of visuals in advertising and entertainment are so rapid it is next to impossible to keep up unless you are ahead of it and inventing the new ways of seeing. However in the interests of being as close to the technology as we can be, we work hard to continue trying new media and applying our award-winning style to whatever technology emerges. We believe this is keeping us ahead of our competition. If we can’t predict or invent where the next visual trend is coming from, at least we can immediately embrace the new trends and work within it’s constraints and opportunities.

iPads and other tablet technologies have opened a multitude of doors to visual professionals. One of them is the simple application of HD video where still images used to reign. Combining the two makes for a very interesting visual solution to creating imagery that first captures the eye, and then satisfies it with the image morphing into video.

Here’s what I mean:

A quick trip out to Steveston with family. It was cold. It was dark. It was the middle of the afternoon and it was getting darker. BUT, the opportunities for cool shots were everywhere. I love the shoreside in Steveston, very cool. Also, I promise one day to shoot a horizontal image. I just need to work up to it….

I took my camera along with me on a family weekend over to Vancouver Island. It’s not often that I would take the gear with me as more often than not I wonder why I am lugging this stuff along. But every so often something comes up that makes me thankful for whatever brain cell told me to grab the camera and a couple lenses on the way out the door. This past weekend was one of those times. Sunset, at around 4:00pm proved to be spectacular. That, combined with the stunning scenery we live amongst here in Vancouver made for some great pictures.
